Will Illinois traffic fatalities top 1,000 this year?

It has been several years since Illinois last had 1,000 or more auto fatalities in a single year. The last time this occurred was in 2008. Last year was a close call, but the total ended up coming in just short at 998.

Unfortunately, it appears Illinois might see over 1000 deaths out on the roads this year. As of August 12, 2016, Illinois had 50 more traffic fatalities, when compared to the same time period in 2015.  If this pace continues, the traffic fatality total will exceed the 1,000-death mark in 2016, and will be the second year in a row traffic deaths have climbed in the state.

Might the remainder of 2016 prove safer out on Illinois' roads, keeping the state from hitting this unfortunate milestone? That depends on the conduct of the state's drivers.

We are entering a time of the year when safe driving can be especially critical. Labor Day weekend is under two weeks away now. Holiday weekends will see additional vehicle traffic, so unsafe driving during this time period could put a lot of people in danger. Also, the school year is kicking off, so we are entering a time where the safety of students in the state, whether they go to and from school by foot, bike, bus or car, will depend on safe driving practices.  One hopes that Illinois drivers will do their part to bolster traffic safety in Illinois and slow the pace of Illinois seeing tragedy out on the roads.
